Shantaram Starring Johnny Depp as Lin
Tentatively set for release sometime in 2008. This movie is based on the true-life story and novel by author Gregory David Roberts, Shantara. It centers on an Australian character named Lin. After his personal life goes out of control, Lin is sentenced to a long, dreadful time in prison. He escapes and makes his way up to Mumbai, India.
There he is befriended by Prabaker, an odd person who takes Lin to his native village slum. The locals take Lin in and rename him Shantaram.
Soon, "Shantaram" has become a native in the day to day life of Mumbai. In an effort to atone for his past sins, he battles fires, tries to aid victims of monsoons, and even sets up a free medical clinic.
Then a mafia chief known as Khader Khan takes Shantaram under his wing. Lin sees Khan as a father figure, and becomes involved in gun running. fighting insurgents in Afghanistan.
