Johnny Depp’s next role is in the film Public Enemy about the notorious gangster of the 1930’s, John Dillinger.

Streetwise at a filming location and lunching with the fans as cameras roll outside on his film PE, currently filming in Wisconsin and Illinois, much of which are night scenes.

It is lunchtime at Water City Grill when Streetwise realizes we have been surrounded by women of all ages. They have cameras ready, hoping for a glimpse of the filming right outside the restaurant’s front windows on Algoma Boulevard.

It is one of the few spots with any sort of view of what’s happening in front of the bank building that represents the Security National Bank and Trust, of Sioux Falls, S.D.

Film crews shifted downtown and pushed their barricades back additional blocks. The effect makes it a challenge to see much more than extras at their various marks.

We have front-row seats to see the actor portraying Sioux Falls motorcycle officer Hale Keith get a shot several times over. Extras dart around us, duck behind cars. It is 180 degrees of action. It is the excitement everyone has waited to see.

The illusion is somewhat destroyed by the production assistants who sadly seem to be little more than traffic directors around the perimeter clinging to crevices and corners where they can to stay invisible while filming goes on Public Enemy.

As filming continues we turned our attention inward to discover almost everyone else in the room is female and we are the only male sitting in the front row.

We notice a few things we find curious:

A guy walks around the restaurant, stands right over us, snaps a few pictures and then walks out without any consideration for buying anything or even thanking anyone.

Everyone has their cameras out and a significant portion of those over 21 have cocktails.

Those who do get pictures of actual filming tend to think that every gangster with a gun is Johnny Depp, who plays Dillinger. The idea excites them.

 Johnny Depp lands in Oshkosh, filming starts

Johnny Depp arrived Friday night around 7 p.m., joining hundreds of extras and film crew on the set for the first day of filming.

Depp stars in the film as bank robber John Dillinger, who was killed by FBI agents in 1935 in Chicago. Filming began in Columbus, north of Madison, last month.

Filming was expected to last at a hangar until dawn. Officials and actors on set say that was one of the few scenes taking place at night.

Filming is expected to move to Oshkosh's Main Street area on Monday. Officials say they expect thousands of onlookers to watch the filming of Public Enemy.
